Så vidt jeg kan se af de fixes der ligger ifm. 8.5.3 Fix Pack 1 så er det server-relaterede issues, så mon ikke der kun er tale om at serveren kommer.

Altid godt med den slags dokumenter og 'feedback' fra Field Service engineers ......MEN der er desværre intet nyt for mig i den whitepaper ;) - Det tager jeg så bare som et kompliment til mig selv :D)

De fleste af de ting der anbefales tager jeg som 'common sence' og best practise for Windows maskine/OS optimering og generel vedligehold i almindelighed - så det burde ikke komme som en overraskelse for IT afdelinger eller support afdelinger synes jeg? Her tænker jeg på login scripts, defragmentering af drev, eskludering af Notes foldere fra AV, indexering m.v. som nævnes
Jeg har altid sagt at Lotus Notes både klient og server (Domino) IKKE kører bedre end det 'skidt' det er installeret ovenpå - 8 ud af 10 performance issues eller fejl er sjældent relateret til Domino eller Notes isoleret, men til det OS, netværk som det er afhængig af m.v. Lige på den front er Domino/Notes ikke 'særlig intelligent' og netop meget afhængig af det der er 'omkring' det. Det ser jeg igen og igen og atter igen IRL - af selv samme grund er en dygtig Notes/Domino admin ikke en person som 'kun' kan Lotus Notes & Domino - så kommer man til kort.
Det specifikke omkring Notes.ini - ja selvfølgelig var jeg lige ved at sige - men det burde en Notes/Domin admin allerede være opmærksom på idag forhåbentlig - eller hvilken som helst IT kyndig - at opgraderinger 'er noget skidt generelt' og man derfor altid skal tage sine forbehold pre- og post tasks ifbm med netop opgraderinger.
Sidst men ikke mindst så synes jeg netop ikke at artiklens forfatter er in touch med den virkelig verden? Der spilles meget på windows indexering i artiklen og det er da helt korrekt - men det afhænger så sandelig meget af brugeren. Har man en IT organisation hvor man bare diktatorisk rulle ALT ned over folk og 100% bestemmer over brugerne og diktere hvordan pc'en skal bruges !! SÅ JA ! så kan det lade sig gøre - men sårn er virkeligheden desværre ikke. Vi IT folk skal sørge for at IT'en kører så optimalt som muligt MEN med brugernes briller på og sandelig ikke med vores egne IT briller på. Mange brugere benytter netop søge muligheden af deres lokale pc rigtig meget..tidligere var det windows desktop search og nu hedder det vist silverlight? Outlook brugere kan slet ik undvære det så har man kunder med mixed miljøer så er det no go !. Og eller stærke brugere af Office pakken kan ej undvære det. Så ved jeg godt at mange steder må brugere ik gemme lokalt på pc (men det sker så alligevel, og det kan jo også være andre dokumenter end firmarelaterede dokumenter brugeren vil søge på lokalt).
Men ellers en udemærket artikel der om ikke andet kaster lys på nogle ting (igen for mit vedkommende) - bare man husker hvordan den virkelig verden også ser ud og har det med i sin 'trimning' >)

Det er korrekt, at enkelte globale virksomheder som eks. Ernst & Young er gået over til Microsofts Outlook, men det er så langt fra ensbetydende med, at Lotus Notes er på vej ud af markedet herhjemme og på globalt plan, vurderer Birgitte Dalsgaard fra Dalsgaard Data A/S, som står for firmaets direkte kontakt med slutbrugerne af Lotus Notes. Firmaet har udviklet løsninger i systemet, og dermed effektiviseret forretningen hos kunderne gennem de sidste 14 år.

Har ikke set ét eksempel
”Vi har ikke set ét eneste eksempel på virksomheder der skifter væk fra Lotus Notes ud fra en komplet business case, hvor den nyeste version af Lotus Notes, bliver vurderet”, siger Birgitte Dalsgaard, som understreger, at Lotus Notes er meget mere end en e-mail og en kalender. Det er en af verdens sikreste og mest lettilgængelige databaser og kan dermed meget mere, end de produkter, det bliver sammenlignet med.

”Og der er adskillige eksempler på, at store brugere af Lotus Notes, som har skiftet til andre systemer, kommer tilbage igen. Et godt eksempel på det var en bank, der havde hele deres kreditvurdering liggende på Lotus Notes og ikke kunne forlige sig med andre systemer, når det kom til stykket,” fortæller Birgitte Dalsgaard.

Understøtter eks. iPhone
Lotus Notes kom på markedet i 1989 og siden IBM købte det i 1995 er det gået stærkt. For få måneder siden blev version 8.5.3 tilgængelig for de over 145 mio brugere, der estimeres at være på verdens plan. Systemet indeholder programmeringsdel, database, social chat, virtuelle møder, fildeling, mail, kalender og meget mere, men endnu mere interessant er, at 8.5.3 versionen er markant forbedret på webudviklingsdelen Xpages, som giver store muligheder for at udvide brugen på f.eks. iPhone og iPad.

Dalsgaard Data er IBM Business Partner og deltager aktivt i Danmarks største koncentration af topeksperter indenfor Lotus Notes, Notesnet.dk. Ifølge Birgitte Dalsgaard rummer systemet så mange flere muligheder, end mange er klar over. Skulle systemet volde kvaler, så bunder det ofte i manglende overblik af, hvad det kan.

Det handler om viden
Når flere taler negativt om systemet er det ofte et resultat af, at de aldrig har fået uddannelse i brugen af systemet, så de reelt ikke kender alle de vigtige funktioner. Det oplever Birgitte Dalsgaard tit, når hun er ude og undervise brugere i Lotus Notes. ”Nej hvor er det smart” lyder det nede fra række 3, fra en kursist der ellers i starten af kurset udtalte sig negativt over systemet.

En anden ting, der opleves som et problem er, at Lotus Notes kan opsættes med mange forskellige rettigheder. I misforstået venlighed kan en IT-mand få lukket for nogle funktioner, som brugerne faktisk mangler.

Skal ikke til begravelse
Dalsgaard Data har ingen planer om at deltage i begravelsen af et system, der i den grad er så vitalt, som Lotus Notes.

“Jeg tror historien bygger på manglende viden om de nyeste versioner Lotus Notes, flere negative oplevelser er et levn fra fortiden, dengang hvor Lotus Notes var den grimme ælling” slutter Birgitte Dalsgaard.

Godt du lagde linket til vejledningen på - det skulle jeg selv lige til at gøre. MEN der er ikke nogen referencer til, hvad du skal gøre på serveren (kun Notes og Domino Designer).

Men ext.lib skal jo også være installeret på serveren for at vi kan bruge funktionerne til en web-app.

Under installationen fik jeg denne fejl:

Det viste sig at jeg havde en tidligere version af Extension library som skulle afinstalleres først. Det virkede desværre ikke på min maskine - så jeg var nødt til at afinstallere Notes for så at geninstallere. Men nu spiller det hele :-) Og hvis du laver XPages så vil du nyde godt af alle de mange nye controls:

EU Center - Enterprise Europe Network i Aalborg har fået en pose EU penge til at hjælpe virksomheder i hele Danmark inden for metalindustri, overfladebehandling og kemisk virksomhed til at gøre sig klar til ISO 9001 kvalitetscertificering, ISO 14001 miljøcertificering, og I kan også vælge at inkludere klargøring til OHSAS 180001 arbejdsmiljøcertificering, - eller andre standarder, som måtte være relevante for jer.

Da vi har stor erfaring i at hjælpe virksomheder med dette, har EU centret entreret med vort firma.
Vi underviser deltagerne på 4 workshops, og imellem workshops undervises via e-learning, og der kan frit kommunikeres via mail og tlf.

4 workshops:
1) 3 timer: Introduktion til projektet/deltagerne introducerer sig selv og sine virksomheder/de lærer hvordan de skal arbejde med e-learningen.

2) 3 timer: Fokus på måleudstyr, maskiner, procesudstyr som skal kalibreres og/eller vedligeholdes og/eller lovpligtigt efterses.

* Hvordan afrapporteres fundne resultater til berørte parter

E-learning:
Via e-learning lærer deltagerne, hvad bør og skal man skrive om i procedurer og instruktioner, som kræves af ISO 14001 miljøstandarden, ISO 9001 kvalitetsstyringsstandarden og OHSAS 18001 arbejdsmiljøledelsesstandarden. Herved bliver deltagerne i stand til at opbygge et integreret ledelsessystem, som ikke kun fokuserer på miljø, men på den helhed, som tilgodeser den enkelte virksomheds behov. Krav fra andre relevante standarder inkluderes i e-learningen, hvis den enkelte virksomhed har behov for det, f.eks. krav fra bilindustriens ISO/TS 16949, krav fra DS/EN ISO 3834 etc.

Deltagerne skriver deres retningslinjer, jeg kommenterer retur, hvorvidt de har "klippet" for meget ud, eller de har skrevet for meget og dermed gjort tingene for bureaukratiske for sig selv.

E-learningen inkluderer også eksempler på de registreringer, som ovenfor nævnte standarder forlanger, - dette i form af fortrykte formularer. Når en virksomhed har løst alle e-learningopgaver og indført de til opgaverne hørende registreringer, er de klar til ISO certificering, hvis det skulle være slutmålet. Ønsker de ikke certificering, har de alligevel opnået en uvurderlig systematik og indsigt i relevante standardiseringskrav i virksomheden, som kan understøtte deres fremtidige arbejde.

For de deltagere der måtte ønske det, stiller vi vort Sherlock system til rådighed for 1 medarbejder i projektperioden (flere kan kobles på mod beskeden betaling). Sherlock indeholder både e-learningen og faciliteter til at skrive dokumenter og registreringer i. Sherlock leveres på en usb, hvorfor deltagerne kan anvende deres Sherlock på enhver pc, og når der er internetadgang på pc-en, sker der automatisk backup til en hosted server, for så er vi sikre på, at alle deltagere altid har backup af deres dokumenter og registreringer.

Efter projektperioden kan deltagerne fortsætte med at anvende Sherlock mod en årlig abonnementsbetaling. Ønsker deltagerne fortsat hosting, aftales pris med hostingfirma jf. hvor meget plads de måtte have brug for til den tid.

SPR# AHAS8D2487 - Fix resolves a Mac specific issue where the new Lotus Connections Files connector for Mac is using the HTMLTransfer data types to drag and drop one or more files from the Connections Files server into a Notes document. The code is expecting a HTML link to be inserted into the Notes document. Instead a Text link is inserted into the Notes document, hence a data loss.

This can also happen on disconnects / reconnects. The client will now report an error when this happens indicating that message could not be sent.

Support for Firefox 4 is introduced in Interim Fix 401.8HF6 for iNotes 8.5.2 Fix Pack 2, which is now available for download from Fix Central (direct download link provided below). iNotes 8.5.2 Fix Pack 3 will also provide Firefox 4 support.

Denne version har jeg ventet længe på og bla pga nogle af disse nyheder:

Kort opsummering – det vi fik i denne annoncering var en mange spændende ting – her er bare nogle af dem, jeg har gået og ventet på:
1) Brug af Audio og Video i browser møder, så vi nu har endnu nemmere ved at deltage i møder – det kræver kun en browser.
2) NAT understøttelse (altså Network Address Translation) så det bliver nemmere i internet sammenhænge…
3) Styring af båndbredde – netop i relation til elementer som audio og video
4) En IBM Sametime klient til min Android telefon
5) En ny, enklere IBM Sametime Unified Telephony 8.5.2 til lettere brug i Unified Communication and Collaboration.

Den indeholder alt som er i FP1 til 8.5.2 - så har du ik FP1 installeret idag så kører du den bare på. I dag har IBM releaset Lotus Traveler 8.5.2.1, der indeholder den nye Andriod OS klient. Traveler versionen hedder 8.5.2.1 og kræver en server version 8.5.2. Traveler understøttes dog ikke på AT&T enheder, da disse enheder kun tillader installation via Andriod Markedplace. Vi - og andre Lotus entusiaster - klager ofte over at man aldrig hører om Lotus og IBM, men altid kun om Microsoft. Derfor er det rart at vide det når IBM får noget publiucity. LotusLive nævnes i indslaget.

PS: Jeg synes kommentarerne på Ed Brills blog er udtryk for smålighed og manglende forståelse for hvad der interesserer hr. og fru America.

Det er jo rigtigt, at man nu kører såvel i5/OS (tidligere OS/400) såvel som AIX og SLES på samme boks. Da jeg kiggede på en sådan boks (bladeserver med et indbygget lille SAN), så var det netop et ekstra processor-kort, som man skulle bruge. Man kunne ikke køre Windows på Power-processor-kortene.

Vi overvejede det til en større web-løsning med flere kunder, der kører på hver deres egen Domino (nogle af jer ved hvilken jeg taler om). Men vi skulle altså have en del flere servere kørende for at det kunne nærme sig noget rentabel - og hvis først du begynder at bruge 32GB RAM-moduler for at kunne få nok RAM til at kunne køre det antal virtuelle maskiner, som processoren kan trække - så bliver det altså dyrt. Vi så et priseksempel, hvor der var RAM for over 180.000. Eneste måde vi evt. kunne lave en spiselig model ville have været at købe en "udvikler"-maskine (med klækkelige rabatter) og så måtte vi (principielt) ikke køre noget som helst produktion på den.

Retfærdighedsvis, så skal jeg understrege, at jeg ikke har set på priseksempler siden. Men jeg ville da meget gerne have lidt "nær-kontakt" med sådan en kværn - for jeg er sikker på, at det godt maskineri :-)

Jeg kan godt forstå dit synspunkt omkring indlæringskurve. Dog mener jeg ikke den behøves at være særlig stor eftersom hele administrationen af Domino serveren er 100% ens med de andre platforme. Selvfølgelig er der noget med slashes i stier i filsystemet som er forskellige mellem Windows og de andre platforme. i5/OS benytter '/' ligesom Linux, hvor Windows benytter '\'. Der er tilmed et Windows-program som man kan styre hele maskinen med.

Installationen af Domino foregår fra en Windows klient med et installations-program som ligner ethvert andet installations-program så her er der heller ikke den store forskel. Det kan lade sig gøre at uploade SAV-filer (i5/OS 'zip'-filer) til i5/OS for derefter at køre installationen direkte fra i5/OS kommando-linien.

Mht. at køre Windows på Power6/Power7 så er det ikke(mig bekendt) længere muligt at køre via et indstikskort (tidligere kaldet "FSIOP"). Hvis man vil have Windows og/eller VMware servere til at køre i et i5/OS miljø så foregår det via eksterne blade-servere som dog har nogle high-performance kort/kabler som at man stadig kan foretage central backup o.lign.

Angående rentabilitet, så har jeg en kunde med kun 4 ansatte (hvoraf den ene er på deltid) og de sammenligner deres IT-udgifter med andre indenfor samme branche og kan se at de bruger væsentligt færre penge og resourcer end deres Windows-baserede samarbejdspartnere. Så tager man regnestykket så tror jeg faktisk alle ikke-enkeltmandsvirksomheder kan spare penge med denne platform. Nu ved jeg godt at firmaerne ofte også har andre programmer der kræver bestemte Windows-versioner o.lign. hvor det måske ikke her-og-nu er rentabelt, men kigger man på at standardisere på fx. Linux og open source så vil man formodentligt hurtigt kunne retfærdiggøre platformen. Fil- og print-server fungerer fint med i5/OS, så har man ikke andre programmer der kører på serveren så kan Power-platformen sagtens klare tingene uden andre bokse.

Du har ret i at Linux kører meget stabilt... ligesom i5/OS. Det er nok også derfor IBM kører med begge på Power-platformen ;o) Jeg har både i5/OS og Linux installationer som stort set ikke bliver rørt andet end når der kommer opdateringer til Domino :o)

Mine oplevelser med RAM var direkte relateret til Domino under Linux - og skyldes sandsynligvis at 64 bit bruger mere RAM pr. "blok". Dine kommentarer om rentabilitet lugter jo også lidt af, at der skal flere brugere/servere til før kalkulen bliver god. Man skal jo også være opmærksom på, at der vil være behov for lidt oplæring ift. et traditionelt miljø. Blandt andet er hele virtualiseringsdelen anderledes - men jeg tror bestemt den er stærkere end f.eks. VMware, da den jo køre meget tættere på hardware. Man skal også være opmærksom på, at hvis man vil køre Windows-servere i denne boks, så kræver det så vidt jeg husker (på Power6), at man indsætter et "intel-lignende" processor-kort, som så kun kan benyttes til Windows. Jeg ved ikke, om dette er ændret med Power7? Hvis man ikke kender System i og iOS, så kunne der også være en nærliggende overvejelse i at køre Domino på Linux (aht. indlæringskurven), selvom du har ret i, at System i kører meget stabilt. Det gør Domino på Linux nu også :-) /John

Du har som sådan ret i dét med RAM'en. De officielle krav er de samme som på de andre platforme, men det er rigtigt at det i praksis kræver lidt mere, men dét er mere et spørgsmål om hvor meget af System i der er dedikeret til batch henholdsvis interaktive processer.

Bemærk at Power7 er væsentlig hurtigere end Power6.

Min anbefaling er dog også at installere Domino på i5/OS og ikke i fx. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Dét er der flere grunde til:

i5/OS styrer tråde og belastning væsentligt bedre end både Linux, UNIX og Windows m.fl. Dvs. at en Domino på i5/OS, der belastes lige så hårdt som tilsvarende installationer på andre platforme, klarer sig væsentligt bedre. Helt grundlæggende klarer den flere transaktioner før den når 100% CPU forbrug.
Grundet ovenstående -- og fordi man selvfølgelig(!) skriver server-side program-logik cross-platform.

Det er korrekt at Power-platformen er lidt dyrere initielt end fx. PC-servere (for at tage low-end server-platformene), men driftsstabilitet, skalérbarhed og den væsentlig mindre system-administration gør den billigere over en 2-3 årig periode. Hvis man tilmed får finansieret købet igennem fx. IBM Global Finance så når man frem til at en typisk installation i Danmark koster mindre pr. medarbejder pr. måned end 2 kopper kaffe pr. medarbejder pr. dag koster virksomheden. Og så har man jo frigivet nogle administrator-resourcer som kan tage sig af andre ting :o)

bemærk, at Domino umiddelbart skal køre på System i eller AIX. Jeg har dog på en Power 6 prøvet at installere en 32 bits Domino under en 64 bits SUSE Linux Enterprise Server via et specielt "kit". Det kan lade sig gøre, men der skal mere RAM til end vi er vant til på rene 32 bits Linux'er. Den server, som jeg var med til at forsøge på, kunne knapt starte med 512 MB RAM. Med 768 gik det lidt bedre. Med 1GB, så lignede det noget, som man kunne køre på :-) Blot til høflig info. Power-platformen er rigtig interessant, men lidt dyrere i "entry", så det kræver en vis størrelse/mængde servere for at det kan svare sig at gå i gang. /John

IBM har netop publiceret en artikel omhandlende konsolidering af servere på én Power7 maskine der kører:

SuSE Enterprise Linux Server (12 stk.)
IBM i5/OS (1 stk.)
Lotus Notes/Domino
Lotus Sametime
Lotus Quickr

samt integration til en VMware løsning med Window.

Konsolideringen har gjort at IT-afdelingen er gået fra at bruge 95% af deres tid på maintenance til blot at bruge 5%. Noget som også kan ses hos danske kunder af Power-platformen.

Det vil være Notes start der bliver bedre.

Tankegangen med at starte noget allerede ved opstart af fx. Windows er at der er en generel holdning til at folk ikke sidder ved deres maskine lige når den starter alligevel, så derfor kan man lige så godt loade lidt mere.

Symphony og Sametime kører som plugins i Notes-klienten og bliver først loadet i dét øjeblik brugeren starter dem, ligesom alle andre plugins.

Det er vel opstarten af Notes der er tale om, som bliver hurtigere. Vi får flyttet noget "load" fra Notes opstart til Windows opstart. Hvad med Symphony delen ? Er det den der er tale om?

Læs mere om 8.5.2 og forbedringerne her.
De nationale sprog-pakker skulle blive frigivet få uger efter. Datoer for dette burde kunne findes på denne side når 8.5.2 frigives (viser pt. kun datoer for 8.5.1). Jf. ovenstående link så kommer de fysiske downloads d. 22. november, men de elektroniske plejer at være tilgængelige noget før, så lad os se hvad IBM kommer frem med.

Android klienten kommer i 8.5.2 som skulle blive klar her i Q3.

Som en ekstra nyhed ifm. 8.5.2 så kommer der også en Lotus Traveler server til Linux (x86) på både RedHat Enterprise Linux Server 5.x og SuSE Enterprise Server 10.x og 11.x.

Her er lidt info hvad Traveler 8.5.2 kommer til at tilbyde - vigtigst er nok at man kan lave opslag i NAB'en fra sin Nokia device samt der kommer en klient til Android selvom det ikke står nedenfor:

New Lotus Notes Traveler features in release 8.5.2 beta
The following new features have been added to this version of the Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.2 Beta release.
· Support for Meeting Invitations on Apple devices
Invitation notices can now be processed on Apple devices. Users invited to meetings can accept, tentatively accept or decline meeting notices right from their mobile device. Support is also included for users to be able to create meetings on the device with attendees, and to reschedule, update or cancel meetings from the Apple device.
· HTTP/S based push for Windows Mobile and Nokia devices
Starting with Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.2, Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 clients will no longer use the separate TCP connection over port 8642 for push messages. These messages now use an HTTP or SSL channel (depends on which connection type is configured for your mobile clients). The Lotus Notes Traveler server will continue to support the older clients which still use the TCP 8642 channel, but if all mobile devices are at the current level, then this feature removes the need to open an additional TCP port in your network firewalls. This feature also will make it easier to implement a network topology that incorporates a reverse proxy server in front of the Lotus Notes Traveler service.
· Corporate Name Lookup for Nokia S60 devices
Support for searching your corporate directory from a Nokia S60 device is included in this beta version. A new application now comes with the Lotus Notes Traveler client which allows you to search for users in your corporate directory display information such as phone numbers and email addresses. Once the application finds the user, you can then use the application to create an email to this user, call their phone number or save this user to your local contacts.
This feature is available now for Nokia S60 devices and will be included for Windows Mobile devices in a future beta drop. A future beta drop will also include the ability to search for a user's email address in the corporate directory while composing an email.
· Automatic Lotus Notes Traveler client updates for Nokia S60 devices
A new installer application called Lotus Installer is now used to install the Lotus Notes Traveler client software and it can be configured to periodically check with the server for any updates to the client software. If updates are detected, the device user is prompted to download and install the latest updates. This feature is available now for Nokia S60 devices and will be included for Windows Mobile devices in a future beta drop.
· Scheduled Synchronization for Nokia S60 devices
Lotus Notes Traveler users on Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 devices can now define a synchronization schedule for peak and off peak work times. On the device, open the Lotus Notes Traveler client application and access the settings to create a custom schedule. Setting the device to use a connection mode other than "Always Connected" will save battery, and being able to adjust the schedule for different times of day and during the week allows you to improve battery life even further. This feature is available now for Nokia S60 devices and will be included for Windows Mobile devices in a future beta drop.
· Data Roaming detection
Lotus Notes Traveler for Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 devices now detects if your device is roaming on a data network. If Lotus Notes Traveler data roaming is disabled, then when this state is detected, Lotus Traveler will disconnect from the Lotus Traveler server and will discontinue any predefined synchronization schedule while in this condition. There is a new preference which can be set to enable automatic synchronization while data roaming, but by default this setting is disabled. Manual synchronization is still allowed, but you will be presented with a warning to confirm your request.
· Support for Windows Mobile 6.5 mobile devices
New Windows Mobile phones are now officially supported by Lotus Notes Traveler.
Note: The Lotus Notes Traveler client for Windows Mobile 5 devices is no longer included in the Lotus Notes Traveler client. The Lotus Traveler version 8.5.2 server still supports all previous releases of Lotus Notes Traveler clients, including those running on Windows Mobile 5, but new features are no longer being added to that code level and that client can be obtained through the Lotus Notes Traveler version 8.5.1 offering.

Lotus Notes 8.5.2 er nu ude i en beta ("code drop 4") og ser ud til at indeholde en masse spændende nye ting.

En af de helt store ting er muligheden for "silent server failover". Detbetyder på jævnt dansk at din Lotus Notes applikation selv vil finde ogbruge en anden server hvis den du arbejder på går ned.

Jeg fandt denne interessante information - som jeg ikke kendte :-)

If you use a Domino server on Windows with web browser clients you should be aware of a change IBM made in 8.0.2 FP3 and 8.5.1 that will dramatically improve download times for web browser clients. IBM was using an older WinSock API to interface with Windows that was not very fast. Microsoft changed to a newer API in Windows 2003. This caused download speeds (for attachments or almost any web content) to be very slow on Windows-based Domino servers. Downloading from the same server using FTP was much quicker. IBM moved to the new API in 8.0.3 FP 3 and 8.5.1. The download speeds are greatly improved. On the TLCC server, we have seen a very significant increase in the download speeds of attachments since our move to 8.5.1. The IBM SPR number for this issue is MKIN7TGMQV.

Kender du IT-akademiet i Computerworld online? Det gjorde jeg ikke. Det er åbenbart et løbende "tema" som har til formål at oplyse om forskellige emner som er relevant for Computerworlds læsere. IT-tekniske emner såvel som emner der er relevante for IT-medarbejdere. Som eksempler kan nævnes Sådan får dine programmer en god performance og Derfor bliver du fyret.

Selv om der er mange nyheder indenfor IBM Lotus Notes i denne tid, synes jeg det er sjældent at Computerworld bringer nogen af dem. Stor var derfor min glæde da jeg så at Computerworld i IT-akademiet bragte en artikel med titlen Optimer din Lotus Notes-oplevelse. Artiklen handler om Lotus Notes version 8 og de mange nye muligheder der findes med denne klient.

IBM's press release on Notes/Domino 8.5.1 beta has been published onthe newswire, including news that Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.1 beta supports the iPhone via Exchange ActiveSync: Although iPhone users can already access Notes e-mail via IBM Lotus iNotes Ultra-Light,today's ActiveSync support will mean push access to the popular software including the ability to view Notes mail, calendar and contacts data when not connected on the iPhone. As Brent Peters and Ed Brill announced at Lotusphere, IBM have added the Exchange ActiveSync protocol to Lotus Notes Traveler in the new 8.5.1 beta. Initially, IBM are configuring and testing that for the iPhone (andiPod Touch) 2.0 software. The functionality is similar to the existing Lotus Notes Traveler capabilities for Windows Mobile and Symbian-based devices.

The 8.5.1 beta went out to hundreds of Notes/Domino design partners just a few hours ago (they know it as "code drop 5"). A managed beta follows later this quarter. IBM plans to ship 8.5.1 later in 2009. For those interested in testing the iPhone piece specifically, it will be available via the Lotus Greenhouse within a week -- target isFriday, May 15.

The Notes/Domino 8.5.1 beta has many other additional features, including support for XPages in the Lotus Notesclient, new LotusScript and Java editors in Domino Designer, andincremental usability Notes improvements. IBM willl be publishing moredetails about 8.5.1 as the beta progresses, and head towards availability in the second half of 2009.

IBM har lanceret hjemmesiden My developerWorks.

Som navnet siger er det et forum for udviklere - ikke kun udviklere indenfor Lotus, men indenfor alle IBMs software produkter.

Hvis man allerede har et IBM ID, fx fordi man er IBM Business Partner eller arbejder i IBM, så kan man logge på med det - ellers kan man så vidt jeg kan se oprette sig selv.

Sitet ser ud til at være baseret på Lotus Connections. Ud over den sædvanlige profil, er der allerede en lang liste af grupper man kan tilmelde sig. Jeg har tilmeldt mig gruppen Lotus Notes Developers.

IBM har i går frigivet version 8.0.1.3 af Lotus Notes Traveler til Domino 8.0. Og hvis du ikke allerede kører traveler, så er det da bare med at komme op på hesten - det kører virkeligt godt!!!

.... i øvrigt er der ingen grund til at starte på version 8.0 - gå direkte til Domino 8.5 og Traveler 8.5.0.1 (bemærk fixpakken, som blandt andet implementerer ændringer, der er med til at spare på strømmen på de mobile enheder). I forbindelse med, at Ed Brill besøgte Danmark, lykkedes det os at invitere ham til en udbytterig aften ved vores månedsmøde 17. marts 2009.

Først fik vi et godt overblik over alle de nye funktioner og produkter, som er blevet lanceret indenfor det seneste år. Dernæst fik vi et åbent og ærligt indblik i de produkter, som vi kan forvente at se i den nærmeste fremtid op til 1-2 år frem i tiden.

Resten af mødet forløb med en åben og god diskussion om forholdet mellem Lotus/IBM, kunder, presse og business partnere. Bo Falkenberg fra IBM Danmark deltog også i mødet, og han kunne medvirke til at skabe en gensidig forståelse for, hvordan markedet og produkterne anskues henholdsvis fra USA, Danmark og slutbrugere og business partnere.

Vi siger tak til såvel Ed som Bo for at de ville stille op til vores arrangement.

.... og den overordnede konklusion til dem der stadigvæk måtte tro, at "Notes er død", der kan vi kun sige: Der har aldrig været så megen udvikling i Notes og de tilhørende produkter, som nu!

Der er d. 11-12 frigivet en hotfix 2 til Notes 8.0.2 klienten, som fixer nogle ting, bl.a. at SameTime prompter for brugernavn og adgangskode midt under klient installationen.
I kan med fordel lægge denne på Notes 8.0.2 klienter.
Det er en standard installer, så I kan dobbeltklikke på filen, eller I kan launche den med parametre. Dvs. kan kan også rulles på silent, som en del af Notes 8 distributionen.

Ja, er man overrakset?? Hvornår bliver vi fri for sådanne tåber, som kun ødelægger det for alle os andre. Så kan man bare håbe, at IBM samler PaaS delen op og udbyder den som en IBM service ligesom Lotus Foundation.

VMware har annonceret en fantastisk interessant ting. Den nye ESXi hypervisor tilbydes nu gratis.

Måske kender du VMware ESX serveren? Jeg har flere års meget positiv driftserfaring med den, og ESXi serveren tilbyder tilsvarende funktionalitet blot med nogle interne ændringer (f.eks. tilbydes overvågning i højere grad via eksterne værktøjer gennem brug af standard protokoller - det betyder, at service consollen, som man kender fra ESX-serveren er væk). Det betyder også, at der nok vil være lidt højere krav til hardwaren (læs: den kører kun på nyere hardware) end til ESX-serveren.

Fik jeg nævnt, at Domino som virtuel maskine med SuSE Linux Enterprise Server som operativsystem kører suverænt!!!

Ærgerligt!

... for dig, som ikke var med i Dublin 4-6. juni. Alle de "skrappe" var der. Nævnt i flæng: Bill Buchanan, Mary Beth Raven, Bob Balaban, Ed Brill, Chris Miller, Rob Novak, Paul Mooney, Warren Elsmore, Gabriella Davis, Ben Poole, Mikkel Heisterberg, .... og mange flere. Fra Notesnet var TriBits, Alces og Dalsgaard Data repræsenteret. Der var et pakket program, med mange virkeligt gode tekniske indlæg. Så selv for nogle af os, der havde været til LotusPhere var der noget at hente. Et virkeligt godt arrangement af den irske brugergruppe med Paul Mooney og Warren Elsmore som primus motorer. Stor tak til dem.

Men der er en chance til 18-19. september i London, hvor der vil blive afviklet et tilsvarende arrangement af den britiske brugergruppe (UKLUG).

Denne nyhed er så kort at jeg blot har sakset den direkte fra Berlingske.dk (er det ikke det journalister plejer at gøre? - de synes jo det er bedre end at bruge dybe links). Jeg synes det er godt at vi ikke bare skal høre om sikkerhedsproblemer i Microsoft produkter, her er endelig noget om Lotus Notes :-)

Kort nyt: Postprogrammet Lotus Notes, der bruges i mange virksomheder, er nu også blevet interessant for hackere.
Ifølge IT-sikkerhedsfirmaet CSIS har programmet en fejl, som gør det muligt for en hacker at inficere programmet. Det kræver blot, at en bruger åbner en særlig fil. Lotus Notes er et IBM-produkt, og det er kun Windows-versionen, der har problemet. Den kan dog afhjælpes ved at installere den seneste sikkerhedsrettelse, som IBM har frigivet. Th.
ComputerWorld har publiceret en mere dybdegående artikel hvoraf det fremgår at den "særlige fil" som Berlingske skriver er et vedhæftet Lotus 1-2-3 regneark. Så er risikoen jo nok ikke så stor, for hvor mange er der tilbage som stadig bruger Lotus 1-2-3?

Så har IBM Lotus frigivet version 7.0.3 af Notes og Domino med over 1.400 rettelser. Der er nu Vista support for Notes klienten, og RHEL 5 support for Domino.

En ny blog er startet om Notes Governance. Foreløbigt bliver udviklernes "disciplin" i forhold til udvikling diskuteret. Og der kan jeg jo kun slå et voldsomt stort slag for at vi alle naturligvis benytter templates, separate miljøer (udvikling, test og produktion) og versionering. IBM har releaset Lotus Symphony som er en gratis officepakke baseret på OpenOffice.
Pakken indeholder:
1. Documents
2. Presentations
3. Spreadsheets
Det er de samme som de Productivity Tools der følger med Notes 8.
Forskellen på OpenOffice og Lotus Symphony er bl.a.
Lotus Smartsuite dokumenter kan tilgås
Kører under Eclipse og Expeditor
Dem som (endnu) ikke har opgraderet til Notes 8 har mulighed for at komme i gang nu. Bemærk dog at det foreløbig kun er en Beta version af Symphony der er releaset.

Erhvervsbladet har testet Gmail beta, Outlook 2007, Lotus Notes 8, Windows Live Hotmail, and Thunderbird 2.0 og er kommet til den konklussion at Notes vinder med et mulehår over Outlook.

IBM har nu frigivet Beta 3 af den nye Eclipse-baserede Notes 8. Dette er den sidste betaversion før den officielle release. Den indeholder ikke debugkode og bør derfor performe bedre end Beta 2.

På baggrund af Semaphors erfaring med Sametime og et vellykket seminar i marts måned, gentager vi sammen med IBM dette spændende seminar om mulighederne med Sametime 7.5.

Udover at vise de nye features i Sametime 7.5 viser vi også, hvordan man integrerer Sametime i sine applikationer, udvikler Sametime-plugins med Eclipse og hvordan vi med produktet Instant Messaging Agent Manager (IMAM) på få minutter, kan skabe integration til virksomhedens informationer og derved give mulighed for at tilgå systemer via Sametime klienten.
